Sixty-two cases of acute flaccid myelitis (AFM), mostly in children, have been confirmed in 22 states as of Oct. 16, 2018, CDC reports. Although an initial spike in AFM cases in 2014 coincided w/ a national outbreak of severe respiratory illness linked to enterovirus D68, EV-D68 was not detected in every pt, and CDC has not been able to pinpoint a specific cause. All cases tested negative for poliovirus.
